CHE 1301 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: Radial Distribution Function, Effective Nuclear Charge, Atomic Orbital
Document Summary
He saw a pattern in the properties of elements. Quantum mechanics is the theory that explains the underlying reasons for the periodic table. Quantum mechanics explains how electrons are arrange in atoms, which in turn determines the element"s properties. Movement of ions is the basis for the transmission of nerve signals in the brain and throughout the body. Every move, thought, sensation is mediated by these ion movements. Tiny pumps in the membranes of cells are working hard to transport ions, especially sodium (na+) and potassium (k+) through those membranes. Sodium ions are pumped out of cells, while potassium ions are pumped into cells. Result is chemical gradient for each ion: the concentration of sodium is higher outside the cell and the opposite is true for potassium. Similar to water pumping against the force of gravity to a roof on a high- rise building.
