CHE 1300 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Scientific Method
Document Summary
Some materials have positive uses for people but can have a negative effect on the environment. To solve this must find environmentally safe alternatives. Defined as the science that deals with the materials of the universe and the changes that these materials undergo. Theory is defined as a summary of the hypotheses that agree with the experimental results. Procedure is for processing and understanding certain types of information. The steps in the scientific method should be repeated many times to explain the behavior in nature. Theory (model) is a set of tested hypotheses that gives an overall explanation of some part of nature. Observation is something that is witnessed and can be recorded. Same observation applies to many different systems in nature. Natural law is a statement that expresses generally observed behavior. Law is a summary of observed (measurable) behavior. Law tells what happens; a theory is our attempt to explain why is happens.
