Document Summary
Control: control what causes it to occur. Recall: critical thinking means questioning and evaluating information. Ask for the definition of each part of the claim. Well supported evidence: research reports based on empirical data that are published in peer- reviewed journals. Peer review: a process by which other scientists with similar expertise evaluate and critique research reports before publication: ensures ethical practices and good design. Flawed studies are sometimes still published: lookout for unreasonable claims and conclusions. Research: the careful collection of data using the scientific method. Hypothesis: a specific, testable prediction, narrower than the theory it is based on. Scientific method is cyclical: no single study can provide a definitive answer about any phenomenon, there is more confidence in findings when research is replicated. Replication: repeating a study and getting the same/similar results: confidence increases when results support the same conclusion. All research involves variables something in the world that can vary, be manipulated, and measured.
