Cultural competence- the ability of service providers to recognize, honor, and respect the beliefs, interaction styles, and behaviors of the individuals and families they serve. Communication difference: a communication behavior that is culturally and linguistically appropriate for a client"s communication difference. Ethnocentrism- the view that members of one"s own culture do things the right way and members of other cultures do things in ways that are unnatural. Cultural relativism- other people"s ways of doing things are different yet equally valid. It is important to distinguish stereotypes from cultural tendencies: stereotype- a fixed, oversimplified image of members of a community, cultural tendencies- patterns of behavior and values that are commonly observed among members of a culture. African american english- a dialect of standard american english: systematic linguistic system, communication difference, not disorder, engage in code switching- using different linguistic styles for different situations, standardized tests are biased against aae.
