How are fluency disorders treated in evidence based practice: treatment techniques for children. Environmental modification models emphasize reduction of the mismatch between environmental demands and the child"s capacity for fluent speech. Parents receive training in 3 techniques to shape their child"s use of fluent speech: 1. Identify disfluencies and provide positive input- parents learn to identify disfluencies and to correct disfluent speech in a nonpunitive and positive manner as in oops that was a bumpy word : 2. Prompt fluent speech- parents prompt the child to produce fluent speech in normal everyday speaking situations: 3. Prompt self-correction- parents help the child identify when disfluencies occur and self-correct. Stuttering modification therapy is to help the person who stutters to better manage the moment of stuttering: therapist provides positive fluency models during comfortable, well-paced interactions. Complicated because most treatments are not designed for adolescents. Fluency disorders can have a significant impact not only on speech.
