Articles of confederation- the compact between the thirteen original colonies that created a loose league of friendship, with the national government drawing its powers from the states. The articles created a type of government called a confederation. Confederation- type of government in which the national government derives its powers from the states; a league of independent states. The government under the articles of the confederation saw the nation through the. Revolutionary war but once the british surrendered in 1781, and the nation was no longer united by the war effort, the government quickly fell into chaos. More than 250 years ago, americans had great loyalties to their states and often did not even think of themselves as americans: this fostered a reluctance to give any power to the national government. Congress rarely could assemble the required quorum of nine states to conduct business.
