Equality of conditions in the us affects public spirit, law, and the habits of those who govern and the governed. Europe is advancing towards the same level of equality. In france 700 years ago, power was passed by inheritance and men could only act on each other through force. The political power of the clergy led to an increase in economic equality. As society becomes more civilized and stable, the relationships between people become more complex and varies. Jurists appear as civil law becomes necessary to regulate the relationships. Trade becomes a new way of gaining power and there is greater appreciation for literature and art. After citizens began to own land outside of feudal tenure, all new processes and needs led towards social leveling. If democracy is inevitable, then to struggle against it is to struggle against god. When a democracy is not properly directed in government, it influences society without changing laws, ideas, habits, or mores.
