GOVT-105 FA2 Chapter Notes - Chapter 6: Glaucon, Endangerment, The Carpenters
Document Summary
Govt-105 - textbook notes - the republic, book iv. Adeimantus asks socrates why the guardians enjoy none of the benefits that other citizens do. Socrates responds that they are not trying to make one group happy, but the city as a whole. If farmers and potters were given fine clothes and food and were told only to work at their pleasure then they would be happier but not good farmers or potters. If guardians are not skilled at governing because they are distracted by happiness, the city will be destroyed. Socrates says they must consider if they are establishing the guardians with the aim of them having the most happiness or for the city. Socrates asks what corrupts craftsmen so as to make them bad. A wealthy potter will not be willing to attend to his art and will become worse because of it.
