GOVT-105 FA2 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Old Age, Polemarchus, Glaucon
Document Summary
Govt-105 textbook note #1 plato"s republic. Socrates goes to the piraeus (port of athens) with glaucon (plato"s brother) to observe the first festival of the foreign goddess bendis. As they are returning to town polemarchus, son of cephalus sends his slave to order them to wait. Polemarchus convinces them to come to his home and stay to watch the rest of the festival. Socrates does not actually want to stay but is intrigued by the torch race on horseback that will happen at sunset. Polemarchus" father, cephalus tells socrates to visit more often because he is too weak to go to town and as he ages he loses his bodily desires in favor of the desires and pleasures of speech. Socrates says he likes to speak to the old because he wants to know about the path ahead of him.
