Document Summary

There are four trends in mass media research: propaganda analysis, public opinion research, social psychology, and marketing research. Researchers during wwi looked at propaganda as positive, but no it"s looked at as negative. Now, propaganda goes past war efforts - now it can be seen for stories, rumors, reports, pictures, and other forms of social communication. Public opinion research provides insights into citizen behavior and social differences, especially during election periods or following drastic national change. Public opinion research has become dependant on polls, which can discourage people to take part in them. Social psychology studies measures the behavior and cognition of individuals. These studies were originally prompted to wonder if movies have a negative effect on teens in the 20s. Marketing research was developed to track customer"s buying habits. Tracking systems emerged with tracking systems over the radio, but soon all companies had some type of tracking system.
