Thaumatrope - 1824, used a 2 sided card w/ different images on each side that appeared to combine the images when twirled. Zoetrope - 1834, a device that rapidly twirled images inside a cylinder. Eadweard muybridge created a projection of a racehorse. 1884 george eastman developed the 1st film roll. Louis aime augustin le prince invented the 1st motion picture roll. 1889, hannibal goodwin improved eastman"s roll by using celluloid - helped produce a series of pictures. Thomas edison & william kennedy dickson created the kinetograph and the kinetoscope (films for single viewers) Louis and auguste lumiere created the cinematograph (a camera, film developer, and projection system) They screened movies that became very popular in france. Edison"s interest was resperked, he developed the vitascope. This enabled long films to be played w/ out interruption. People were bored of everyday life and wanted narrative films. Georges melies used extensive editing to tell stories in his short films.
