VISA 1900 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5-6: Mail Art, Ivan Karp, Canadian Art
Document Summary
Art as an artist: you are more critical of art if you have knowledge of it. Rooms with a view: contemporary gallery: the white cube is seen as cold. Perspective is everything: curators use museums as a palette; arranging art in a room changes how art work is perceived. Ivan karp: started his own gallery (ok harris, there are two classes and we have to be multicultural, art is political; only recently it isn"t. In the beginning there was more art that displayed a message (propaganda etc. ) and now it"s more abstract. Museums and how they differ: western museums make universal claims, natural history museums make implicit and powerful connections / comparisons, cultural museums use assertion and silence and show shape" of how society is changing. Three types of multicultural exhibits: western and non-western art side by side, shows how exhibits determine our knowledge, site specific (depends on where in the museum it is)
