Modernization theory is the mainstream school of scholarship about poverty and economic, social, and political development in the countries of the third world. An important idea in this school is the concept of the traditional society. Modernizationists think of today"s third world societies as being largely traditional. They also think of western europe has having been traditional in the long period before the era of modern economic growth and cultural change. According to this view, the essence of a traditional society is that it is stagnant and unchanging. Rhythms of life are circular - life of routine and repetitiveness. Emotionally comfortable, each person has a place that is secure. Traditional person identifies with his/her ancestors and emulates them. Daily work is done to maintain one"s place in society, not to secure a profit. No innovation or attempt to better one"s lot.
