This is done through the concept of ideology. Ideology is a type of knowledge that involves the use of ideas to manipulate the way we see the social world and then affects how we understand them. Therefore the power that is held over individuals is not fixed but is flexible and can be changed. Women before 1929 were not considered as persons. They were persons in matters of pain and penalties, but not persons in matters of rights and privileges. Nellie mcclung was the reason why in 1929 canadian women became legally allowed to attend universities serve in public offices, and practice a trade to earn their own living. Viola desmond was an african canadian, who was charged and arrested one night because she sat in the white only area in the theatre and refused to sit in the black people section.
