Male and female relationships provides students with the opportunity to examine male and female social relations in contemporary western society. In the first half of the course we will critically review various explanations and theories for sex and gender difference, and will explore in considerable detail the social construction of femininity and masculinity. This will enable students to develop an understanding of the relationship between sex, gender and sexuality. This analytical framework will be applied in the second half of the course to examine specific gender arrangements in personal and institutional settings. We will study how social institutions and popular culture help shape intimate and public relations among genders. Course structure: class sessions include lectures, group discussions and films.
