In colonial times, as cities became more industrialized people who were mentally ill were no longer taken care of in the agrarian communities. Instead they were institutionalized in places that were crowed and treatment ranged from restraint to cruel punishment: late 1800s freud gave us an intervention using psychoanalysis aimed at the individual rather than societal level. 1946 congress passed the national mental health act allowing for the promotion and treatment of mental health. 1949 national institute of mental health was established for research and training in mental health: battle between psychologists and psychiatrists for the right to prescribe medication and practice in hospitals. 1945 veterans administration worked with apa to expand clinical psychology training as a science- practitioner model. 1950 pharmacologic agents were developed to treat psychosis and other mental illness the focus for mental health patients shifted from institutions to being cared for in the community (deinstitutionalization)
