3 types of territories used by humans and they differ in their imp. To the individual"s or group"s life- primary territories are the most imp. Functions of territoriality animals maintain territory for mating, food gathering, finding shelter, rearing young, etc, so it is imp. Experiments hard to perform w/ humans b/c territoriality implies a strong attachment b/w an ind. And a place so hard to recreate in artificial settings so dorms give good data students whose decorations showed diversity and commitment to the uni. Setting were likely to survive uni rigors and it could be b/c of feelings of security, lack of decorations could mean alienation and higher chance to drop out from school. Territorial behaviour when alone ppl feel a stronger ownership of a setting when alone than when part of a group: may be more vandalism and theft in group residences than in ind. residences.
