Chronic pain = pain that has lasted 6 months or more after injury has healed. Women more likely to have chronic pain (back pain, migraines, arthritis), as are the elderly. Additional factors include being unmarried, lower ses, rural area. Pain hurts and can overwhelm other needs. Critical for survival provide low-level feedback about functioning of our bodily systems. Most likely symptom to lead to treatment seeking, hampers recovery, exacerbates illness. Influences on pain: influenced by culture, gender, coping style, context: culture: some cultures report pain sooner and experience it more intensely (ex. Chinese have lower pain tolerance: gender: women are more sensitive, influenced by hormones. Women more likely to experience phantom limb pain. Women may respond to threatening stimuli with greater negative affect amplifies pain: coping style: people who catastrophize pain ruminate about it more, magnify it and feel more helpless feel more pain.
