General term for illness caused by atherosclerosis (narrowing of arteries) restricted o2 & #2 killer in canada; 1/5 deaths; usually before age 75 (premature) Prevalent more recently nourishment to heart pain through chest & arm (called angina pectoris) C-reactive protein assesses inflammation marker of chd. Increased waist circumference + low physical activity = high c-reactive protein. Metabolic syndrome (predicts ha): has 3 of more of obesity around waist, high bp, low hdl (good cholesterol), difficulty metabolizing sugar (diabetes risk), high triglycerides (bad cholesterol) Genetic predisposition effected by low ses, harsh family conditions, stress, etc. Heart disease more common in low ses, esp males (physical inactivity, smoking, high cholesterol, overweight?) Social instability (high in industrialized/urban areas, migrants, cultural change) High levels of demand and low levels of control. More dangerous for women: fewer referred to cardiologist, fewer recover, etc. Leading killer in canada but most focus is on men.
