Depressants: decrease arousal and increase relaxation, people use these drugs to reduce anxiety and induce sleep. Hallucinogens: produce perceptual distortions such as marijuana. Narcotics: sedatives that relieve pain and produce a relaxed feeling: who uses drugs and why. The most popular drug in the world is marijuana. Drug reaches its highest prevalence in early adulthood and declines after. Polysubstance use: using more than one substance. Although using a less serious substance tends to precede using more serious drugs, the evidence is correlational and does not demonstrate conclusively that using one substance causes the use of another. Non mainstream youth, those who belong to marginalized groups, are more likely to abuse substances and engage in polysubstance use than are their peers.
