If the axons myelin sheath is destroyed, the signal may not be sent effectively: multiple sclerosis is due to degeneration of myelin sheaths. Basically: info is received at the dendrites, passed through the soma and along the axon, and transmitted to the dendrites of other cells at meeting points called synapses. The neural impulse: using energy to send info. The synapse: where neurons meet: sending signal: chemicals as couriers, neurons don"t touch; they are separated by the synaptic cleft (gap b/t terminal button of one neuron and the cell membrane of another) Neurotransmitters and behavior: specific neurotransmitters bind to specific sites, agonist chemical that mimics neurotransmitter, antagonist chemical that is the opposite of neurotransmitter. Diagrams of brain found on page 100, 104 and 105. Functions and characteristics: activate motor neurons controlling skeletal muscles, contributes to regulation of attention, arousal and memory, some ach receptors stimulated by nicotine.
