Long: whether to break up with a boyfriend, which university to go to etc called controlled thinking. Automatic thinking: thinking that is nonconcious, unintentional, involuntary and effortless. Schemas: mental structures people use to organize their knowledge about the social world around themes or subjects and that influence the information people notice, think about and remember. Ex of schema: schema of how to act in a restaurant vs fast food restaurant etc. Are often referred to as stereotypes when applied to race. Study that simulated cops: people played a game where either a white or black man was holding a gun or a non threatening object. People stereotyped the black man as being dangerous and usually chose to shoot them even though they were holding a non threatening object. The content of our schemas are often culturally modified. People of different cultures have different schemas than others.
