PSYC 2120 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Autopilot, Minority Influence, Idiosyncrasy
Document Summary
Conformity: a change in behavior as a result of the real or imagined influence of other people. Informational social influence: conforming because we believe that others" interpretation of an ambiguous situation is more correct than ours and will help us choose an appropriate course of action. Ie the example done in class there you see a light and then you see it again and you have to guess the amount it moved. It is known as autokinetic effect: if you stare at a bright light in a uniformly dark environment (ie a star on a dark night ) the light will appear to waver. This occurs because you have no stable reference point to anchor the position of the light. Private acceptance: people conform to the behavior of others because they genuinely believe that these other people are correct. Public compliance: conforming to other people"s behavior publicly without necessarily believing in what they are doing or saying.
