PSYC 2030 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Institutional Review Board, Belmont Report, Deeper Understanding
Document Summary
3 general research strategies = descriptive, relational, experimental) Ethics means ethos which means character/ disposition; ethic today = conduct that is considered morally right/ wrong as specified by codified and culturally ingrained principles/ constraints/ rules/ guidelines. Major concern = deception (dishonesty/ tricking); ex. would be giving false info to participants, misinterpreting purpose of study or procedure, giving incomplete info to participants but saying was completed. Active deception = ex. manipulating the truth. Passive deception= ex. spying on someone or not giving important info. The belmont report = had 3 principles set as an ethical foundation of human subjects research: respect for persons, beneficence (doing good/ generosity); is now called nonmaleficence, justice. Also had established the use of informed consent procedures and a gatekeeping mechanism in form of institutional review boards (irbs) to weigh the risks and benefits of proposed research in order to protect human participants from harm. After this report, accountability was now important.
