Document Summary

Module 42- trait theories, social-cognitive theories and the. Allport describes personality in terms of fundamental traits (something freud could not do) people"s characteristic behaviours and conscious motives (such as curiosity). Allport was concerned less with explaining the individual then with describing them. Trait: a characteristic pattern of behaviour or disposition to feel and act, as assessed by self-report inventories and peer reports. Classifying people in distinct personality fails to capture individuality. By placing people on trait dimensions allow psychologists to describe countless individual personality variations. There were almost 18,000 words to describe people. This is a statistical procedure used to identify clusters of test items that tap basic components of trait: eg, a person who is outgoing, likes excitement, dislikes readings would be called a extraversion. Hans eysnck and sybil eysnck reduced it to 2 or 3 dimensions: extraversion-introversion, emotional stability- instability. Eysnck believed that these factors are due to genetic influence.
