Document Summary

Consciousness is the awareness of internal and external stimuli. Contents of consciousness are continually changing and fluctuating, like william james described a stream of consciousness. Almost every human behaviour comes from a mixture of conscious and unconscious processing . Mind wandering refers to people"s experience of task-unrelated thoughts. Thoughts that are unrelated to what they are intentionally trying to do at that particular moment. Freud studied the unconscious mind and believed that people"s feelings and behaviours are dependent on unconscious wishes, and conflicts that lie below the surface of conscious awareness. Autonomic processing and its effects happen without our intentional control or effort. Under some circumstances, the quality of decisions made under conditions when individuals do not have the opportunity to engage in conscious thought may sometimes be more accurate. Attention is key to distinguishing between conscious and unconscious thought processes.
