What is sleep: brain is conscious when asleep still, hearing your name can wake you up. How do our biological rhythms influence out daily functioning: circadian rhythm: internal biological clock, regular bodily rhythms that occur on 24-hour cycle, age and experience can alter circadian rhythm. Leaves muscles relaxed expect finger, toe, or facial twitch: kind of paralyzed, can"t be easily awakened, rem sleep is sometimes called paradoxical sleep: body is internally aroused with waking-like brain activity, yet asleep and externally calm. Sleep cycle repeats itself every 90 mins for young adults: as the night goes on nrem-3 sleep frowns shorter and disappears and rem and nrem-2 sleep period gets longer. How do biology and environment interact in out sleep patterns: everyone gets diff amounts of sleep, babies sleep longer. Sleep patters are genetically and culturally influenced: ppl rarely snore during rem. Suprachiasmatic nucleus (scn): paid of grain-of-rice-sized, 10,000-cell clustered in the hypothalamus.
