Document Summary
Physical illness originally viewed as biological, gave way to the biopsychosocial model of illness. Biopsychosocial model- holds that physical illness is caused by a complex interaction of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors. Back then, main threats of illness were contagious diseases caused by things like smallpox, typhoid fever, malaria, etc. Today, chronic diseases have replaced these, like heart disease, cancer, strokes. Psychosocial factors like stress, lifestyle play part in these diseases. Health psychology- concerned with how psychosocial factors relate to the promotion and maintenance of health and with the causation, prevention, and treatment of illness. Aftermath of natural disasters lead to elevated rates of psychological problems and illness. Everyday stresses: waiting in line, car trouble, shopping for gifts, losing cell phone, commuting. Because stress adds up: appraisal: stress lies in the eye of the beholder. Experience of stress depends on what events one notices and hoe one chooses to interpret/ appraise it.
