Document Summary

Chapter 6. 2 tools for studying history: the fossil record. An organism is buried in ash, sand, mud. If decomposition does not occur, the organic remains can be preserved intact. If the remains decompose after they are buried, the hole that remains will fill with dissolved minerals and create a cast of the remains. Organisms living in areas like swamps and beaches are more likely to form fossils. Organisms with bones or shells are most likely to leave fossil evidence. Recent fossils are more common than ancient fossils. The older a fossil is, the more likely it is to be demolished. Organisms that are abundant and present on earth for long periods of time leave evidence much more often than do species that are rare. Oxygen was virtually absent from the oceans and atmosphere for almost two billion. Life was e(cid:454)(cid:272)lusi(cid:448)el(cid:455) u(cid:374)i(cid:272)ellular for (cid:373)ost of earth"s histor(cid:455) years after the origin of life.
