Document Summary
Behaviorism: the idea that scientific psychology should only study observable behavior. Founded by watson: stop studying the consciousness/subconscious and study observable behavior, allowing scientist to prove or disprove theories. P10: after this psychologists began to relate overt behaviors (responses) to observable events in the subjects environment (stimuli) They stopped studying consciousness, as such they didn"t need to communicate with their subjects and began to experiment on animals. Experimenting on animals allows them to have complete control over the animals environment in a way they could never have with humans. Freud tried to treat mental disorders through psychoanalysis. Unconscious: contains thoughts, memories and desires that we are not aware of that affects our behavior. Freudian slips and that express feelings that we are unaware of. Psychoanalytic theory: explains personality, motivation and mental disorders by focusing on the unconscious. Freud wasn"t the first but it moved away from the prevailing thought that ppl had complete control of their own minds.
