Substance use disorder: continued substance craving and use despite life distribution and/or physical risk. Psychoactive drugs: chemical substance that alters perception and moods. Tolerance: with the continued use of a drug, brain"s chemistry adapts to it and dilutes the effects, you need a larger dose now. Addiction: craves the substance, despite the bad effects. Withdrawal: distress that follows after trying to quit. When drug use is a disorder: diminished control, diminished social functioning, hazardous use, drug action. Depressants: calm neural activity and slow functions: alcohol. The urges you would feel when you are sober, are the ones you will most likely act upon when you are intoxicated. Memory disruption: can disrupt memory formation, heavy drinking can also have long term effects on memory (reduces birth of new nerve cells), blackouts. Reduced self awareness and self control: zone out. Expectancy effects: when people believed alcohol has influenced them, it does: barbiturates. Can impair memory and judgement: opiates.
