Stress: the process which we perceive & respond to events, called stress, that we appraise as threatening or challenging, Catastrophes: unpredictable large scale events ( ood, earthquake) affects emotional & physical health. Signi cant life changes: divorce, death, moving etc. affects - more vulnerable to disease. Daily hassles: money, work, economy, prejudice, stereotypes - emotional & physical health (cardiovascular system especially) Walter cannon: ght or ight system. (adrenaline from adrenal glands + arousal) General adaptation syndrome (gas): selye"s concept of the body"s adaptive response to stress in three phases - alarm, resistance, exhaustion. Life-shortening: telomere (dna pieces at the end of chromosomes) shorten with stress. & when they get too short, the cell dies = early ageing & death. Tend and befriend: under stress people tend to provide support for others (tend) & bond and seek support from other"s (befriend). especially women. Health psychology: psychology"s contribution to behavioural medicine.
