PHIL 2170 Chapter Notes - Chapter Notes from Assigned Moodle Readings (second half of course): Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Jean-Paul Sartre, Existentialism
Document Summary
Christian contention: christians do not like existentialism because they think it trivializes the reality and seriousness of human affairs (ignoring god"s commands and doing as we wish) Note: sartre contends that existentialist has come to mean pretty much anything the user of the word ascribes it to it has in a sane lost its meaning entirely. Two kinds of existentialists: the christians , the atheists including sartre. Note: the commonality between both types of people is that they both believe that existence comes before essence subjectivity comes before anything else. Note: man possesses a human nature this is what gives him the conception of a man the essence of man then precedes any experience, no matter which man we are talking about. Atheist existentialism vs. christian existentialism: atheists contend that god does not exist, but that there is at least one being where we have the example of essence coming from existence.
