Dutch admiral roggeveen was first european to visit the island on easter sunday. The irony: by then only 3000 people lived there, warfare and cannibalism was their attempt to supplement the food supply available on the island. Captain cook visited in 1774 and took some people as slaves. People depended too much on their environment and irreversibly damaged their surrounding. Colonization of the easter island was the last phase of the human settlement across the globe: roman empire was collapsing, china was in chaos following the fall of the han empire, india was a mess too. Polynesians were the most wide spread people on earth: double canoes were used joined together by a central platform, deliberate colonization missions. Environment included: 3 extinct volcanoes, temperature was hot, humid and high, drainage was bad and no permanent streams on the island, fresh water was from lakes inside extinct volcanoes.
