- Appeal to Authority
- four different kinds, but all take the same form: “Because X says it, it must be true”
- Appeal to the Authority of the One
- (i) where X is not an authority in that field
- (ii) when the topic is one where the authorities don’t agree
Ex: Ernestine was an expert at many things but that does not mean he was an expert at babysitting.
Why: Just because one is an expert on a topic, it does not logically follow that the person is an expert at everything
- Appeal to the Authority of the Many (aka the Consensus Gentium fallacy)
- the fallacy here is supposing that just because many, or most, or all people believe something therefore it’s true
- numbers of believers, by itself, does not logically mean that what they believe is true
Why: Just because most people believe something, it does not logically follow that its true for everyone else
- Appeal to the Authority of the Select Few
- appeals to our feeling that we’re special or our desire to be (aka Snob Appeal)
Ex: agree with me and buy my product because hardly anybody else is.
While it may sound like a lousy call for pity for a floundering business, it is really an appeal to everybody's natural urges to
distinguish themselves from all the rest. It is an appeal to your inner snob.
