MGMT 3100 Chapter Notes - Chapter 1: Fundamental Justice, Law Society, Legal Liability
Document Summary
Law is needed to protect persons, property, and society as a whole; it prohibits conducts that society believes to be harmful to others, such as assaulting another person or steali(cid:374)g a(cid:374)other perso(cid:374)"s property. It prescribes simple but vital rules that allow us to get on with our everyday life: ex. driving on the right side of the road. Law gives government the power to act for the benefit of society as a whole. It authorizes government to provide policing, firefighting, education and health care, and to raise taxes to pay for those activities. We expect our government to operate in accordance with the rule of law. Rule of law: established legal principles that treat all persons equally and that government itself obeys. Public law: law that regulates the conduct of government and the relations between government and private persons. Private law: law that regulates the relations between private persons and groups of private persons.
