Anatomy of respiratory system: nasal passages (nose, pharynx (throat)- common passaged for respiratory & digestive system, trachea (windpipe)- tubes from pharynx. Conducts air into lungs: larynx (voice box) - located near trachea. During swallowing, vocal folds close off trachea: bronchi- division of trachea. It enters right & left lungs: bronchioles- smaller branches of bronchi, alveoli- terminal ends of bronchioles. Air sacs where gases exchanged b/t air & blood. 2 individual process: internal respiration, external respiration. Internal/cellular respiration: metabolic rxn that take place in cell to produce biochemical energy from fuel molecules, energy released is stored as atp. Rate of ventilation regulation to adjust flow of air b/t atmosphere & alveoli: exchange of co2 & o2, b/t air in alveoli & blood in pulmonary capillaries by diffusion. In lungs: transport of o2 & co2 by blood b/t lungs & tissues, exchange of o2 & co2 b/t blood in capillaries and tissues by diffusion.
