Compensation can include, salary, bonuses, reimbursement for expenses, etc. Professional sport began with the olympic games in 776 bce, a class of professional known as athletai existed. These were a group of well paid men recruited from mercenary armies. Boxers, jockeys and runners were paid for their process during the early and mid 19th century. Baseball was the first team sport to employ pros, in 1869, the cincinnati red stockings became the 1st pro baseball team. In 1871 the first pro league was formed.
