Document Summary

The body has several physiological mechanisms to regulate food intake, energy expenditure and body weight. In response to overfeeding, individuals will typically increase their resting, energy expenditure (ree) unconsciously, and decrease their ree in response to caloric restriction in order to "defend" its body weight. The degree which this occurs varies between individuals and explains some of the differences in susceptibility to weight gain and weight loss. Most who lose weight will re-gain that weight within a couple of years and often struggle with their weight going up and down several times throughout their lifetime. This is called weight cycling, and this pattern of weight change may have independent deleterious effects in health independent of the level obesity. Weight loss results from a negative energy balance caused by either a reduction in caloric intake or an increase in energy expenditure. This can be achieved by modifying diet, exercise, pharmacological agents or surgical means.
