Sources: how we know about the ancient greeks. Written remains words of the greeks themselves or of others who wrote about them. Archaeologists study past through material remains buildings, tools, pottery. Create a history of material culture on the changing patterns they see in the physical record. Historians study past using documents, inscriptions, and literary texts to construct a narrative of events and people involved. What they did, why they did it, changes brought on by their actions. Ancient greece lies underground aside from temples and buildings, everything we have has been dug up from dozens of feet below surface. Gold, silver, bronze, and terra-cotta (clay baked at high temps) items are mostly found not iron or anything made of wood, cloth or leather (they decay or corrode) Aryballoi - perfume flasks that stood 2 or 3 inches high. Pithoi - put used for storing olive oil and grain and very tall (as big as humans)
