FILM 1020 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Optical Transfer Function, Chromatic Aberration, Telephoto Lens
Document Summary
Lens gathers light rays and focuses it into an image on surface of a frame of film. Photographic lenses are assemblies of simpler lenses called elements": elements are similar to lenses in magnifying glass, some elements are cemented together to form complex elements", lens barrel: holds the elements in groups. Perspective: the rate at which objects become larger the closer they are to the camera. The farther the camera is from the subject, the flatter the perspective. Long lenses make distances seem smaller and vice versa. Close-ups: wide angle lenses distort the face, making the nose seem bigger. Windowing: using only part of the sensor to capture a particular format. Changing recording resolution also changes field of view. Speed of lens: the maximum light-gathering efficiency of the lens (faster = more light, slower = less light: expressed as f-stop or relative aperture) Iris diaphragm: can close to control amount of light lens lets through: aperture: hole made by iris diaphragm.
