Document Summary
Social model of health (new public health approach) focuses attention on the societal level of health determinants and health intervention. Social model of health has been used as an umbrella term to refer to approaches that focus on the social determinants of health and illness. Dorothy broom: the social model locates people in social contexts, conceptualises the physical environment as socially organised, and understands ill health as a process of interaction between people and their environments . The social model of health highlights that health and illness occur in a social context and that effective health interventions, particularly for preventative treatment, need to move beyond the medical treatment of individuals. The social model logically implies that any attempts to improve the overall health of the community need to address overall living and working conditions such as poverty, employment opportunities, workplace health and safety, and cultural differences.
