Document Summary

Ecology- the study of how organisms affect and are affected by other organisms and their environment. Scientific method: make observations, form a question, form a hypothesis, make a testable prediction (if then , test the hypotheses by conducting a critical experiment, make conclusions and make revisions. Biological indicators- animals such as amphibians have very permeable skin and pollutant molecules will pass through them easily. Life cycle of ribeiroia (possibly liked to frog deformities) Begins as eggs with snails (first intermediate host) They grow to become cercariae which use amphibians (second intermediate host) The adult form of the parasite is then found in birds (definitive host) Observation: many frogs with deformities are in the presence of a parasite and it may be the cause of deformities. Experiment: glass beads placed in tadpoles to mimic the effect. Controlled lab: 4 groups of frogs with parasites; 0 (for control), 16, 32 or 42 per tadpole.
