Document Summary

Demography: the number of individuals present in a population depends on 4 processes: birth, death, migration & emigration. Populations grow due to births & immigrations (moving to into population) Populations decline due to deaths & emigration: demography: study of factors that determine size & structure of structure of populations through time. But if population comprises of old individuals with low reproduce rates & low survival rates, then population declines. 3 types of survivorship curves: humans have type 1 survivorship curve. In this pattern, survivorships throughout is high- most individuals approach the spe(cid:272)ies" (cid:373)a(cid:454)i(cid:373)u(cid:373) life spa(cid:374: type ii survivorship curves occur in species where individuals have about the same probability of dying in each year of life. Ex: songbirds & blackbirds (linear: many plants have type iii curves- a pattern defined by extremely high death rates for seeds & seedlings but high survival rates later in life.
