Document Summary

When biodiversity increases, branches and tips are added. Biodiversity can be measured and analyzed at several levels. To get a full understanding of diversity of life, biologist recognize & analyze biodiversity at the genetic, species and ecosystem level. Genetic diversity is total genetic information contained within all individuals of species. Its measured as number and relative frequency of all alleles present in a species. Catalogue genetic diversity: ability to sequence the entire genome of multiple members of same species, the research protocol called environmental sequencing. It"s measured by quantifying the number & relative frequency of species in a region. Species diversity is based on variety of species on earth. Technique called barcoding: use of well characterized gene sequences to identify distinct species, using phylogenetic species concept. Variation in one gene allows biologist to identify a species. Specific gene used as a barcode varies among lineages. Taxonomic diversity is important b/c some lineages on tree of life are rich in species.
