Document Summary

Caused by a mutation to a gene that codes for a protein called cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (cftr). This protein not acting properly causes the mucus in the lungs and intestines to be dry and thick. Plasma membrane: selectively permeable barrier, that takes in and lets out necessary things and maintains a protected environment for cellular processes to occur. It maintains ion gradients, is involved in signalling and metabolism. [endif]carbohydrate on the outside linked to lipids (glycolipid) or protein (glycoprotein). Fluid mosaic model: (2 proofs- membranes are fluid and membrane asymmetry) Membranes are not rigid with molecules locked in place. It consists of proteins that move around within a mixture of lipid molecules that has the consistency of olive oil. Fluid- lipids, mosaic- assortment of proteins and other things in membrane. Lipid bilayer: membranes consist of a double layer of lipids, and the lipids are always moving around.
