Document Summary

Alexander the great changed the world the greeks knew, forever. His death in 323 bc marked the end of the classical period. Also had practical training in kingship, governing macedon in philip"s absence, and suppressing a thracian rebellion. Alexander"s personal role was never more important than in the critical rst year of his reign. He campaigned in the spring of 335 against the thracians and illyrians, thereby making clear that philip"s death would bring no easing of the macedonian yoke. He completed his rst major campaign by in icting severe defeat on his father"s old enemy, the illyrian king cleitus. His long absence in the north sparked rumors of his death in greece. He however brought the macedonian army to thebes before the rebellion could spread, persuading athens and sparta to withhold their support. Greeks long remembered the destruction of thebes as one the great atrocities of their history. Alexander invaded asia in the spring of 334 bc.
