Reading- chapter 11- 14 for november 6th 2012. Social psychiatry evolved into cultural psychiatry indigenous methods of medicine were given in large parts of the world; distress became medicalized & new symptoms were created. Some believe culture-bound syndromes are episodic & dramatic reactions specific to a particular community; hughes- unique & distinctive, but in those who are seen as the others . Culture bound syndromes- rare, exotic with unpredictable & chaotic behaviours, seen as uncivilized. These behaviours are placed in the context of western diagnostic systems without any cultural links between environmental stressors & social environments, which become medicalized. There"s a contextual frame of reference for understanding clinical significance of these conditions. For over a century, culture-bound syndromes were seen in the east, but recently in western society ie bulimia, shoplifting, type a personality *contribute to failure of achieving goals, leading to aggressiveness & impatience in interpersonal relationships. Can be the result of egocentric or individualistic societies.
