Document Summary

Sources: how we know about the ancient greeks: Sources are the raw material of history out of which historians get their info and stories. Sources fall into 2 broad categories: the physical remains, and the written remains. Physical remains- includes anything material, from bones to buildings. Written remains- includes the words f the greeks themselves or of others who wrote about them in antiquity. Historians primarily use documents, inscriptions, and literary texts to construct a narrative of events and the people involved in them. Everything we have as evidence comes from underground. The soil of greece is not good for preserving things; artifacts made of wood, cloth, and leather are rarely found; metal like gold and silver is much better and more easily found. It was mainly on the basis of pots that archaeologists were able to construct a chronology for prehistoric/early historic greece that could be translated into actual dates.
