We must identify the author"s claim first. Claim - major conclusion of a piece of writing that the author is trying to persuade you to accept. Sometimes explicitly said, sometimes you have to look for it. Important to note that your statement of the claim is fair and not distorted from what the author said. There will also be evidence, the examples and reasoning that are presented to support the claim. People may accept a challenge in some conditions, even if no evidence is provided in its support. Normally don"t question claims that are consistent w/ our own experiences and observations, things that we have actually seen, or touched. Some claims appear to be facts that are independent of interpretation ex. Areas in which there"s agreement among experts, or strongly supported general claims that are common sense, are often uncontested. Ex. you can"t physically be in 2 places at one time - most people agree on this.
